Field notes, quick answers

Arenal questions, answered

The five things every traveller asks before booking, with the short honest answer first.

When is the best time to visit Arenal?February and March are the best overall months, with dry skies and the clearest volcano views. September is the best value pick, greener, calmer and kinder to your budget.
How much does an Arenal combo tour cost? Most volcano, waterfall and hot springs combos start from $105 per person, indicative. Full day trips with meals included usually run from $130 to $185.
How do I get to Arenal from San Jose?La Fortuna sits about 2 hours from San Jose airport by car or shared shuttle. Most combos include hotel pickup, so you rarely need to drive yourself.
Can you climb Arenal Volcano? No, climbing to the crater is not allowed. The volcano is protected and trails stop on the lower lava fields, which still give you close views of the cone and the 1968 flows.
Do I need to book Arenal tours in advance?Yes in the December to April dry season, when the top combos sell out days ahead. In the green season one or two days of notice is usually enough.
